While selecting an Internet plan, which is more important, Download or Upload Speed?
Should ISP’s highlight the Upload Speeds offered?

To improve your upload speed, check plans offered by different ISP’s.

ISP’s providing Cable or DSL Internet provide plans with Download speeds which are 4-times to 25-times higher than Upload speeds e.g. up/down of 1.5/20 Mbps.  Most ISP’s do not highlight the Upload speeds and you may have to search for the information (ISP’s providing Fiber Internet typically provide symmeteric upload/download speeds).

These Internet plans are modeled assuming traditional usage of the Internet - the User using the Internet to view content (viewing text, photos, videos online, Youtube) with minor interactivity (sending emails, posting on Social sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc). The assumed usage model is not much different than that of a User passively watching TV.

This traditional usage is already changing. Users want to interact more actively over the Internet and 24×7.

Web services such as TenM3 enable Users to interact actively online e.g. with their always-On LIVE video Feeds which requires good upload speeds.

For the web services, Upload speed is even more important than the Download speed. An ideal plan would have equal Upload/Download speeds at a low monthly price, as offered in Japan.

It is encouraging that ISP’s are starting to improve the Upload speeds e.g. Comcast 10/50 plans, but they still have a long way to go.

While picking an Internet plan, get a plan with the highest Upload speed possible for using web services.
