Panasonic IP camera specs and a discussion on how to select a Panasonic IP camera is below. And then, setup a Panasonic IP camera in simple steps.
The tables below compare the cameras across different features and the price (Amazon on Nov 13, 2009). Follow the previous link for the full list of cameras, detailed specifications and link to buy at Amazon.
Newer cameras are highlighted in blue and are preferable as they provide better quality and more features.
Wired or Wireless - Pick a wired or wireless (WiFi) camera based upon the location. Pick a wireless camera (e.g. BL-C121) if Ethernet cables cannot be placed or if the camera has to be moved easily and frequently. Pick a wired camera (e.g. BL-C101) if Ethernet cables are already at location or can be placed. Wired connections generally have better quality, as they are not susceptible to interference.
PoE or AC adapter for power - For PoE (power over Ethernet) cameras, the power is carried over the Ethernet cable. It provides great convenience, as a power plug is not needed close to the cameras location. This is especially useful for outdoors where power is not available. PoE will require a PoE adapter or switch to drive the camera. PoE adapters are included with some cameras (e.g. BL-C101, BL-C140), while for others you’ll need to buy a separate PoE adapter (e.g. for BB-HCM581). If you plan to use an AC adapter, make sure to specify it while purchasing, as an AC adapter is not always included with the PoE cameras.
Indoor or Outdoor camera - Pick the camera based on where it will be placed - indoors or outdoors. Outdoor cameras are splash proof (e.g. BL-C140) and sealed (e.g. BB-HCM547). Also check the operating range (temperature) of the camera. If the camera will be outdoors in extreme conditions, a protective dome with a heater or blower may be needed.
Audio - most cameras can send audio along with video. The cameras with built-in mic will pick up all ambient sounds. The sound pickup is quite good. Cameras, which have a mic-in, can take a direct audio feed from a sound system using a 3.5 mm mini audio jack - these will provide the best sound quality.
Pan, Tilt, Zoom (PTZ) - When you need to move the camera remotely PTZ features are needed - to see in different directions and to see far objects. These are more expensive than fixed cameras. Pick according to how you plan to use the camera
Wide Angle - Cameras with a wide-angle lens (e.g. BB-HCM547) will show more of the scene with a wider viewing angle. Pick according to how you plan to use.
Night vision - When you want to see a scene in low light conditions, pick a camera with a lower lux rating (e.g. BB-HCM581 with 0.09 lux). Under no light conditions it will be difficult for any camera to see the scene. Make sure there is some ambient light.
Operating range - Pick the camera according to the ambient temperature range at the location. If the ambient temperatures are outside the operating range, a heater or a chiller will be needed for the camera.
Up/Down orientation - Some cameras are designed to be only mounted on the ceiling (BB-HCM547) pointing down, others can be mounted on the ceiling or placed upright on a desk (BB-HCM581), while most others are designed for placing upright (BL-C101)
Power consumption - Since the cameras operate 24/7, the power consumed becomes an important factor, especially if many cameras are placed at the location. All the cameras listed have low power consumption.
CCTV cameras - The IP cameras listed above provide ease of use, great convenience, easy upgradability and a range of features suited for any location. They work with your existing network and unlike CCTV cameras, do not require heavy video cables routed through the location. And, with TenM3 service, other than cameras, nothing else is required at the location - no DVR, no PC, no equipment. However, if CCTV cameras are already in place at location, use them with TenM3 service as shown here.
